Want a Stronger Hook? Try These 3 Landmine Exercises at Your Next Session

If you want to level up your hook, it’s not just about throwing more punches, it’s about building the strength behind it.

A powerful hook is a full-body movement. Your legs create the force, your core drives the rotation, and your upper body delivers the shot. If one part of that chain is weak, your power drops off. That’s where strength training, and esepcially landmine work, comes in.

The landmine is one of the most effective pieces of equipment for boxing because it trains movement patterns that closely mimic how you actually punch: rotational, controlled, and driven from the ground up.

Here are three to try in your next workout:

1. Landmine Rotations

This is as close as it gets to replicating the motion of a hook.

With both hands on the bar, you rotate side to side, pivoting through your feet and hips while keeping control of the movement.

Why it works:
This exercise strengthens your rotational core muscles (like your obliques), which are responsible for generating power in your hook. It also teaches your body to transfer force efficiently from your lower body through to your upper body – so you’re not just swinging your arms, you’re delivering a full-body punch. On top of that, it improves control when decelerating, which helps you snap punches back faster.

2. Landmine Press (With Rotation)

Here, you’re pressing the bar forward while rotating through your hips and shoulders.

It’s controlled, powerful, and closely mirrors the way your body moves when punching.

Why it works:
This movement connects your lower body drive with upper body output, which is essential for boxing. It builds strength in your shoulders and chest while reinforcing proper sequencing – hips rotate first, then the torso, then the arms. That sequencing is what creates powerful, efficient punches rather than wasted energy. It also improves stability through your core, helping you stay balanced when throwing hooks.

3. Landmine Squat to Rotation

This one combines a squat with an explosive rotational finish.

You drop into a squat, drive up through your legs, and rotate the bar across your body.

Why it works:
This exercise builds power from the ground up, which is exactly how a strong hook is generated. Your legs produce the force, and the rotation channels it into your punch. It also trains explosive strength, helping you generate speed without losing control. Plus, by combining lower body and rotational movement, it improves coordination – so your whole body works together more efficiently.
