It’s well-known that reaching Everest Base Camp is no small feat. For Rhys, the journey to Base Camp was the culmination of months of UBX training, sheer determination, and mental grit – a challenge that equally pushed his limits and rewarded him with an experience he’ll never forget.
“It was a great feeling reaching Base Camp,” Rhys said. “Achieving a goal I had been working towards, pushing myself to get there, and seeing the magnitude of Everest and the other mountains – it’s awe-inspiring.”

A birthday to remember
Among the incredible moments from the trek, one stands out the most. Rhys celebrated his birthday at the historic Tengboche Temple, surrounded by the breathtaking Himalayan peaks. “Having my birthday at Tengboche Temple was really special,” he said. “The views of Everest were amazing – it’s something I’ll always remember.”
Tested to the limit
The journey to Base Camp was far from easy, but it was the return trek that truly tested Rhys’s endurance. “On the last day of the return journey, my legs felt like lead weights,” he recalled. “There were so many stairs – it became a real mental game to just keep pushing forward and get to Lukla.”
That mental toughness, he said, is something UBX training had prepared him well for. “UBX gave me the overall fitness and resilience to push through tough tasks. The workouts teach you to dig deep – and that carried over to the mountain.”
Strength in community
For Rhys, one of the most memorable parts of the experience was sharing it with a group of like-minded UBX’ers. “The group was amazing,” he said. “Everyone worked together with a positive attitude and great humour. When one of us was struggling, the others were there to lift us up.”

A new perspective
Reaching Base Camp has left Rhys with a renewed sense of purpose and perspective. “It made me realise I can push further than I thought,” he reflected. “And it reminded me how much I’ve missed the outdoors – it’s made me want to get back into nature more often.”
His advice to anyone considering their own Everest – literal or figurative – is simple: “Go for it. It’s achievable for anyone willing to step outside their comfort zone. The effort is absolutely worth it. Pictures don’t do it justice – the magnitude and beauty of the mountains are incredible.”
What’s next for Rhys?
Having only recently completed this monumental adventure, Rhys already has his sights set on his next challenges. He is looking to compete in a Corporate Clash next year, and he’s got his sights set on completing the K2 Base Camp trek as well.
From the UBX gym floor to the world’s highest peaks, Rhys’s journey is a testament to what’s possible when training, teamwork, and determination come together.
