UBX is all about celebrating the journeys that push limits, spark inspiration, and show what true grit looks like. Today, we’d like to introduce Mike, the winner of our recent UBX Open Week Competition! As Mike gears up for the Everest Base Camp Adventure next month, we wanted to share a little bit about his journey and training so far.

Why Everest Base Camp?

Working as a data scientist for an online marketplace and tutoring at the University of Sydney, Mike leads a busy life. For Mike, trekking to Everest Base Camp is one of those life-list experiences that many dream about but few make happen.

“There’s a natural curiosity about the world’s highest mountain,” he says. “Trekking to base camp also seems to be quite achievable, even though it sounds like a much more extreme experience”.

Mike has actually travelled to Nepal previously but wasn’t able to embark on any longer treks – it’s a dream he’s kept in the back of his mind ever since. Winning the competition means that dream is now becoming a reality.

Training for the Challenge

So far, Mike’s training has been strength-focused – building general fitness and, importantly, the leg strength he’ll need for the journey ahead. Now, with the trek approaching, he plans to shift gears toward more cardio training to increase endurance. While Mike has tackled some longer single-day hikes before, this will be his first-ever multi-day expedition. When asked what he’s most excited about, he mentioned the views and amazing scenery as a standout – we don’t blame him!

Beyond the physical achievement, Mike hopes this adventure will spark more future expeditions.

“I want to come back eager to go on more adventures with family and friends,” he says.

The Road Ahead

With his eyes firmly on Everest Base Camp, Mike is gearing up for a journey that will challenge him physically and inspire him for years to come. We can’t wait to follow along and cheer him on every step of the way.

Good Luck, Mike!
